Joan lived for many years in Japan where she practiced Zen under the direction of the late Yamada Koun Roshi, then abbot of the Sanbô School of Zen. She was authorized by him to teach Zen in 1983. Since 1984 Joan has led Zen groups in Switzerland, Germany, Italy and the United States. In 1990, along with Willigis Jaeger, she established Sonnenhof, a center for Zen and contemplation in the Black Forest, Germany. At present Joan lives in New Mexico where she heads the Sandia Zendo.
Please note: The zendo will be closed for 'summer break' from June 25 to Aug 5. Regular sitting schedule will resume with zazenkai on Saturday Aug 6.
We sit the first 4 Saturdays of the month from 9am to noon. When there is a 5th Saturday in the month, we will not sit that Saturday unless otherwise indicated on the calendar.
Please take time to check out the History of Sanbô Zen on the About page. We have posted a short history written by Joan and Henry Shukman which was given at an international conference sponsored by Tiantong Temple where Dogen Zenji practiced in China.
Please check out the "teisho" letter written by Joan in Oct 2015 for the Sonnenhof newsletter. Use the link at the bottom of the Home page.
